SOUTH ASIANS DRESSES

A kurta is a traditional item of clothing worn in Afghanistan, Bangladesh, India, Pakistan, and Sri Lanka. It is a loose shirt falling either just above or somewhere below the knees of the wearer, and is worn by both men and women. It can be worn with a dhoti, loose salwar pants, churidar pants (a tight-fitting variant of the salwar), as well as jeans. Kurtas are worn both as casual everyday wear and as formal dress. communion veilWestern women often wear inexpensive imported kurtis as blouses, usually over jeans. These kurtis are typically much shorter than the traditional garments and made with a lighter materials, like those used in sewing kameez. Imported kurtas were fashionable in the 1960s and 1970s, as an element of hippie fashion, fell from favor briefly, and are now again fashionable.
South Asian women may also wear this Western adaptation of South Asian fashion. Formal kurtas are usually custom-made by South Asian tailors, who work with the fabric their customers bring them. South Asians overseas, and Westerners, can buy them at South Asian clothing stores or order them from web retailers. A traditional kurta is composed of rectangular fabric pieces with perhaps a few gusset inserts, and is cut so as to leave no wasted fabric. The cut is usually simple, although decorative treatments can be elaborate. The sleeves of a traditional kurta fall straight to the wrist; they do not narrow, as do many Western-cut sleeves. Sleeves are not cuffed, just hemmed and decorated. The front and back pieces of a simple kurta are also rectangular. The side seams are left open for 6-12 inches above the hem, which gives the wearer some ease of movement. The kurta usually opens in the front; some styles, however, button at the shoulder seam. The front opening is often a hemmed slit in the fabric, tied or buttoned at the top; some kurtas, however, have plackets rather than slits. The opening may be centered on the chest, or positioned off center. A traditional kurta does not have a collar. Modern variants may feature stand-up collars of the type known to tailors and seamstresses as "mandarin" collars. These are the same sort of collars seen on achkans, sherwanis,
Nehru jackets. Materials Kurtas worn in the summer months are usually made of thin silk or cotton fabrics; winter season kurtas are made of thicker fabric such as wool (as in Kashmiri kurtas) or Khadi silk, a thick, coarse, handspun and handwoven silk that may be mixed with other fibers. Kurtas are typically fastened with tasseled ties, cloth balls and loops, or buttons. Ready-made kurtas often avoid the use of horn buttons, in deference to Hindu sentiments; such buttons are frequently made from cow or buffalo hooves or horns. Buttons are often wood or plastic. Kurtas worn on formal occasions might feature decorative metal buttons, which are not sewn to the fabric, but, like cufflinks, are fastened into the cloth when needed. Such buttons can be decorated with jewels, enameling, and other traditional jewelers' techniques. South Asian tailors command a vast repertoire of methods, traditional and modern, for decorating fabric. It is likely that all of them have been used, at one time or another, to decorate kurtas. However, the most common decoration is embroidery. Many light summer kurtas feature Chikan embroidery around the hems and front opening. This embroidery is typically executed on light, semi-transparent fabric in a matching thread. The effect is ornate but subtle.

SHALWAR KAMEEZ AND CHURIDAR

Salwar Kameez and ChuridarSalwar Kameez is the most popular traditional attire worn by the women in India. It is called the Punjabi Suit or Salwar Suit also. This popular Indian Dress evolved as a comfortable and respectable garment for women in India, but is now immensely popular in all over the world. The Salwar is a baggy pajama type of trouser, which has legs wide at the top and narrow at the bottom. The Kameez is a long top or tunic, which often reaches up to the knees. The length of the Kameez can vary depending on the latest fashion in style. The Salwar is stitched very differently. It has pleats at the waist and is held up by a drawstring or an elastic belt. The middle portion of a Salwar is very wide and baggy, but it gradually tapers down around the ankle. Another variation in Salwar is the Churidar style which is a somewhat like a tight trouser, but with its fabric ending in various small folds around the ankles. Usually Indian women also wear a dupatta across their shoulders, over the Salwar or Churidar Kameez as a symbol of modesty.

CASUALS WEARS

example, choose cohesive pieces built around basic styles and three colors for the best mix-and-match wardrobe (khaki, denim, red; black, khaki, white;etc.)
Find great casual shoes because nothing kills a chic sporty look like a pair of white running shoes. Retro sneaks in colorful suedes, boots, sandals, etc. are great with most casual wear.
Use casual accessories and handbags -- don't try to mix a gold and diamond watch with a sweatshirt unless you're a rapper. Choose sporty watches and bags to keep from mixing styles.
Keep your casual clothes in tip-top shape -- ironed, cleaned, mended.
Avoid casual cliches like baggy sweats and leggings. The former is for lounging around the house only and the latter will make you look like you're stuck in the '80s. Instead, opt for great track suits with a more fitted look in fun colors (pink, blue, red)and rich fabrics like velour or terry.
Don't get ridiculous about style. If you're working in the garden or cleaning the house, you can wear whatever works for you. As a matter of fact, keep some grungy clothes just for those down-and-dirty tasks. Unless you live next door to Mr. Blackwell, no one's going to hold it against you.

PROTETECTYOUR EYES

Protect Your Eyes
From Invisible Threats One of the greatest threats to your eyes is invisible. The scientific evidence is piling up: Long-term exposure to invisible ultraviolet radiation can damage our eyes and lead to vision loss. Everyone — including children — is at risk.
In recognition of May's designation as UV Safety Month, the American Academy of Ophthalmology — the Eye M.D. Association — reminds Americans of the importance of protecting their eyes from the sun's harmful rays by wearing sunglasses and wide-brimmed hats.

Like your skin, your eyes never forget UV exposure. Studies show that exposure to bright sunlight may increase the risk of developing cataracts and age-related macular degeneration, both leading causes of vision loss among older adults. UV exposure, wind and dust can also cause pterygia, benign growths on the eye's surface. The more exposure to bright light, the greater the chance of developing these eye conditions, said Tucson, Ariz. ophthalmologist Dean Brick, M.D., an Academy spokesperson.

BABY DRESS

baby fashion
Modern society revolves around concepts such as beauty and originality, ideals that have been embraced and implemented by fashion designers worldwide. Undoubtedly, fashion has always been a powerful means of expression, as the way we dress reflects our cultural provenience, mentality, personality, and even our feelings. In addition, fashion has the great merit of combining practicality with aesthetics, and could be perceived as “a pragmatic form of art”. Being influenced by many different cultural and social factors and permanently adapting to the needs and requirements of a continuously developing society, fashion has suffered a lot of radical changes over the course of time. During its ongoing process of evolution, it has generated many different styles and trends, revealing traits characteristic to each distinctive generation.

Despite the fact that it has created many tendencies and has evolved continuously in conformity with the society’s ideals and needs, fashion has only recently begun to pay equal attention to all categories of age. Although they were generally neglected in the past by clothing manufacturers, children nowadays form an important segment of clients in the fashion industry, enjoying an extensive and varied range of clothing appropriate for their age. The children’s clothing industry has only recently begun to achieve a good exposure and popularity, gaining a lot of ground over the past few years.

COOKTAIL DRESS

A cocktail dress
or cocktail gown is a woman's dress worn at cocktail parties and semi-formal occasions.
The length of cocktail dresses varies depending on fashion and local custom. The length ranges from just above the knee to touching the ankle. When it is about 5 cm (2 inches) above the ankle it is called tea length and when it is almost touching the ankle it is called ballerina length, although ballerina length dresses usually fall into the evening gown category.
At semi-formal occasions, less elaborate, shorter-length cocktail dresses may be worn, when gentlemen are in dark suits. Prior to the mid 20th century this type of dress was known as 'late afternoon'. When gentlemen are in business suits, ladies also wear dress suits or "good" afternoon skirt and dresses.

1980s dress
By the 1980s a dress was considered to be cocktail less by where the hem fell, but more by the level of sumptuousness the garment attained.
In the mid-20th century, some couturiers began describing full-skirted cocktail gowns as "dancing costumes". These are suitable for formal dances but not for balls, or other white tie affairs, where ball gowns are worn.

ALL BABY'S SHOES

Babies should not have to break in their shoes. After your baby has toddled around the store in the new shoes for a while, take the shoes off and check baby's feet for any signs of chafing or pinching. If the shoes rub or seem to make walking difficult, find another pair. You should be able to put your pinky finger in between the heel of the shoe and the baby's foot, and there should be about a thumb-width between baby's toes and the end of the shoe.

baby shoes
Just like adults, babies' feet can sometimes swell towards the end of a hard day. Shopping for baby's walking shoes later in the day will ensure the shoes are not too tight when baby's tootsies are tired. Plan your shopping trip for after a nap or at a time when your baby is normally in a good mood. Getting a cranky, tired baby to walk around and model shoes won't make for a pleasant trip

babies wear
Check the fit of your baby's shoes at least once a month. All babies grow at different rates, but you can expect to buy shoes in bigger sizes at least every three to six months. Some babies, like my daughter, will require bigger shoes almost monthly. Check for signs of wear on the shoes and be ready to replace them if the bottoms crack or if there are holes in top or sides. Babies and toddlers will find plenty of things to trip over, so be sure their shoes aren't part of the problem

AFGHAN FASHIONS DESGINS

Afghan Fashions Hit India Runway
In early December 2007, with the help of USAID’s Afghanistan Small and Medium Enterprise Development project (ASMED), two Afghan design firms participated for the first time at a fashion show in India. Afghanistan World Wide Shopping Online Mall (AWWSOM) and Zarif Zuliakha attended the fashion show organized by the Fashion Design Council of India, in cooperation with the Indian Ministry of Foreign Affairs, for members of the South Asian Association for Regional Cooperation (SAARC). Returning from the fashion show, the design companies stated that the event was a successful step in introducing high quality Afghan garments to an international audience. Mrs. Mina Sherzoy, Director of AWWSOM, stated, “Afghanistan is taking baby steps in the fashion world. The country is reviving its history and culture through fashion to the younger generation here and the international markets. We would like to show the world that Afghanistan has the best quality products and handicrafts. This fashion show also offered an opportunity to learn how to set up a real professional fashion show in the future in Afghanistan. As a result of participating in the fashion show, AWWSOM signed contracts with leading design firms from the SAARC member countries. Some have even shown interest in creating a partnership with the Afghan design firm for expanding their production capacity to reach a higher number of vendors and markets in the region. Zarif Zuliakha firm also reported successes from the event. The firm identified potential partners who are interested in investing in the sector and expanding it. Additionally, Zarif Zuliakha received several orders from the show. While this fashion show was a first step for Afghan design firms to introduce Afghan handicrafts and techniques to the region, ASMED will continue to support strengthening the sector in Afghanistan; thus, expanding the overall diversity of Afghan exports.

NEW YORK FASHIONS

NEW YORK FASHIONS

Bryant Park have been tut-tutting this week as workmen and small cranes have once more invaded the usually tranquil handkerchief of green – or snow-covered white right now – behind the New York Public Library in advance of the latest installment of New York Fashion Week.
The eruptions in February and September on its main lawn of the big white tents that hold the three catwalks, countless changing rooms for the models and space to seat thousands on little white chairs, is part of what has given Bryant Park, until the late 1980s a dusty hang-out for dope-dealers and the homeless, some of its cachet. That and its parades of 200 plane trees and well-tended gravel paths.
But the park, it turns out, is over Armani and Hilfiger. In fact, though we only learnt it this week, its managers have been pressing for years for the eviction of the fashion festivities from its manicured boundaries. While there was resistance from some, including from the indomitable Anna Wintour, the editor of Vogue whose offices overlook the park, a below-the-radar search was soon on to find a new place to accommodate the tents.

Fashion Week

It fell to the Mayor of New York, Michael Bloomberg, to break the news. Fashion Week, which first settled at Bryant Park in 1993, will be moving itself lock, stock and camera-lens barrel to a somewhat unloved space behind Lincoln Centre, the hub of Manhattan's most prestigious cultural institutions, including the opera and the ballet. The plaza in question is called Damrosch Park. Not heard of it? Nor had most Manhattanites before now.
Reaction has ranged from horror to ho-hum, with some expressions of delight in between. Certainly, the Bryant Park Corporation is voicing satisfaction, noting that it could no longer allow the shows "because they were interfering with plans to operate a skating rink in the winter and public use of the main lawn in the late summer"

Fashion OF America

Though the shows last barely seven days, the whole business of building and dismantling the tents lasts three weeks.
The move up to Lincoln Centre will not happen until September 2010, meaning that there will be three more Fashion Weeks at Bryant Park, including this month's, which begins at the end of next week.
Most urgent for Mr Bloomberg was stopping Fashion Week, which is run by the Council of Fashion Designers of America (CFDA) and IMG Fashion, leaving town altogether. Last year, the two events drew 232,000 attendees and generated $466m (£323m) in spending. "We worked hard to find a new location because there had been increasing pressure for the events to move to Los Angeles. That would be a real hit to our economy," he said.

LOVLY DESGINS
It has not been easy to find a place for us, a place that was big enough, that was centralised enough, that was right enough," added the designer and CFDA president, Diane von Furstenberg, confirming the choice of Damrosch Park. "Since we're starting afresh we will try to make them better than the previous one."
There are some good things about the new location at Lincoln Centre, including a promise of 25 per cent more space. Bryant Park, which is flanked on one side by 42nd Street, has, for years, really been too tight a venue, which explains why increasing numbers of designers, including Tommy Hilfiger and Donna Karan, have, in recent years, eschewed the tents altogether and shown elsewhere in the city. Whereas there used to be 35 shows in the park during each Fashion Week, these days the number has risen to almost 70.
